وَدِدتُI wished سَقامَsickness جِسميmy body فيin غَراميmy ardent love
وَدِدتُ سَقامَ جِسمي في غَرامي
بِمَنْfor one who شَمسthe sun الضّحىof midmorning وَالبدرَand the full moon أزرَىput to shame
بِمَنْ شَمس الضّحى وَالبدرَ أزرَى
I wished for my body to sicken in my love
I wished my body sick in my passion
For one who put the midmorning sun and full moon to shame.
For she who outshone the dawn and full moon
فَنِلتso I gained السّقمَsickness ياO تيهيmy pride سُروراًwith joy
فَنِلت السّقمَ يا تيهي سُروراً
فَقَدfor indeed أَشبهتهI resembled him عَيناًin eye وَخصراand waist
فَقَد أَشبهته عَيناً وَخصرا
So I gained sickness with joy—oh, my pride!
So I gained sickness, my joyous delirium
For I have come to resemble him in eye and waist.
For she resembled eyes and a slender waist
