قُلتُ بَيني وَبَينهُ
ضاعَwas lost شَيءٌsomething لِعَبدهِbelonging to his slave
ضاعَ شَيءٌ لِعَبدهِ
I said: between me and him,
Between us something of his servant has vanished
something belonging to his slave was lost.
It was asked, "What?" I said, "A year between my back and his nape."
قيلَit was said ماذاwhat? قلتُI said سنa tooth (also: age)
قيلَ ماذا قلتُ سن
بَينَbetween ظَهريmy back وَقَدّهِand his stature
بَينَ ظَهري وَقَدّهِ
They asked, “What?” I said, “A tooth,
between my back and his stature.”
