دَخلتُI entered إِلىto صَيداSidon بِشَهرِin the month of صِيامناour fasting
دَخلتُ إِلى صَيدا بِشَهرِ صِيامنا
وَكُلٌّand everyone بِهِin it مِنfrom شِدَّةِthe intensity of الحرِّthe heat مَجنونُmad
وَكُلٌّ بِهِ مِن شِدَّةِ الحرِّ مَجنونُ
I entered Sidon in the month of our fasting,
I entered Sidon in our fasting month
And everyone there was maddened by the intense heat.
And all were crazed from the extreme heat
فَقُلتُso I said هِلالُcrescent الشَّهرِthe month مَنwho ذاthis one لَهُfor it رَأىsaw
فَقُلتُ هِلالُ الشَّهرِ مَن ذا لَهُ رَأى
وَياand oh لَيتماif only رائيهِthose who saw it موسىMoses وَهارونُand Aaron
وَيا لَيتما رائيهِ موسى وَهارونُ
So I said: Who has seen the month's crescent?
I asked, "Who has seen the new moon?"
And oh, if only those who saw it were Moses and Aaron!
Would that the seers be Moses and Aaron!
فَأَخبَرنيthen he told me القاضيthe judge بِأَنّthat هِلالَهُits crescent
فَأَخبَرني القاضي بِأَنّ هِلالَهُ
رَآهُsaw it بِليلِon the night of السّبتِSaturday موسىMoses وَفِرعَونُand Pharaoh
رَآهُ بِليلِ السّبتِ موسى وَفِرعَونُ
Then the judge told me that its crescent
The judge informed me that the new moon
Had been seen on the night of Saturday by Moses and Pharaoh.
Was seen on Saturday night by Moses and Pharaoh
