أَتيتُ إِلى النّدبِ الرّشيديِّ راجِياً

أَتيتُ إِلى النّدبِ الرّشيديِّ راجِياً

إِجازاتِهِ اللّاتي تُشرِّفُ عبدَهُ

إِجازاتِهِ اللّاتي تُشرِّفُ عبدَهُ

I came to the noble al-Rashidi, hoping

I came to the wise lament seeking

for his authorizations, which honor his servant.

His permissions that honor his servant

فما نِلتُ ما أمّلتُه ورجَوتُه

فما نِلتُ ما أمّلتُه ورجَوتُه

وأُبْتُ وقد أبقيتُ روحي عندَهُ

وأُبْتُ وقد أبقيتُ روحي عندَهُ

But I did not obtain what I had hoped and wished for,

Yet I did not attain what I hoped for and wished

and I returned, having left my soul with him.

And I returned though my spirit remained with him
