أَنا الّذي لِلواحي حَيثُ قابَلَهم

أَنا الّذي لِلواحي حَيثُ قابَلَهم

أَضحى يُداريهِم وَيَخشى تقوُّلَهم

أَضحى يُداريهِم وَيَخشى تقوُّلَهم

I am he who, when he met the reproachers,

I am the one who met them where the valleys lie

Came to placate them and fear their slander.

And now avoids and fears their fickleness

وَحَيث عَن حِبِّه قَد كانَ سائلَهم

وَحَيث عَن حِبِّه قَد كانَ سائلَهم

قَالوا حَبيبُكَ مَحمومٌ فَقُلت لَهُم

قَالوا حَبيبُكَ مَحمومٌ فَقُلت لَهُم

And when he had asked them about his beloved,

And where about his love he asked of them

They said, “Your beloved is feverish,” so I told them:

They said your lover is sick, and so I told them

أَنا الّذي كُنت في حِمّائِهِ سبَبا

أَنا الّذي كُنت في حِمّائِهِ سبَبا

لا تَعجَبوا فَلظىً كَالجزءِ مِن خَلَدي

لا تَعجَبوا فَلظىً كَالجزءِ مِن خَلَدي

“I am the one who caused his fever.

I am the one whose love was cause of his fever

Do not marvel, for blazing fire is like a fragment of my heart,

Be not surprised that the blaze was part of me

وَإِنَّ نارَ الدُّنى كَالبعضِ مِن جَسدي

وَإِنَّ نارَ الدُّنى كَالبعضِ مِن جَسدي

مُذ زَارَني بَعدَ أَن أَفنى الهَوى جلَدي

مُذ زَارَني بَعدَ أَن أَفنى الهَوى جلَدي

And indeed, the fire of the worlds is like a part of my body.

And worldly fire is like my body's limb

When he visited me, after passion had consumed my endurance,

Since he visited when love all my skin did sear

عانَقتُهُ وَلَهيبُ النَّارِ في كَبِدي

عانَقتُهُ وَلَهيبُ النَّارِ في كَبِدي

فَأَثَّرت فيهِ تِلكَ النّارُ فَاِلتَهَبا

فَأَثَّرت فيهِ تِلكَ النّارُ فَاِلتَهَبا

I embraced him, with the blaze of fire in my liver;

I embraced him though fire raged in my liver

So that fire affected him, and he burst into flame.”

So that fire did mark him, and he caught aflame
