مِنfrom عَينِeye of حِبيmy beloved الأَكحَلِthe kohl-eyed الزَّينِthe beautiful
مِن عَينِ حِبي الأَكحَلِ الزَّينِ
How did you steal the kohl, O gazelle of the wild,
How did you steal the kohl, O gazelle of the wilderness,
from the eye of my beautiful, dark-eyed beloved?

وماand not علمتُI knew الظّبيَthe gazelle لصّاًa thief غَداbecame
وما علمتُ الظّبيَ لصّاً غَدا
قدmay يسرقُhe steals الكحلَthe kohl منfrom العَينِthe eye
قد يسرقُ الكحلَ من العَينِ
Never did I know the gazelle to become a thief
And I never knew the gazelle had become a thief
who might steal the kohl from the eye.
