رَمانيhe shot me بِسَهمِwith the arrow of اللّحظِthe glance مِنfrom هدبِthe lashes of جَفنِهِhis eyelid
رَماني بِسَهمِ اللّحظِ مِن هدبِ جَفنِهِ
فَرُحتso I became قَتيلَslain by السّهمِthe arrow مِنfrom ذَلكthat الهدبِfringe of lashes
فَرُحت قَتيلَ السّهمِ مِن ذَلك الهدبِ
He shot me with the arrow of his glance from his eyelid’s lashes.
He shot me with the arrow of his glance from the bow of his eyelids
So I fell slain by the arrow from those lashes.
So I was delighted to be the victim of that arrow from that bow
وَلَمand did not أَرَهُI see it لِلقَلبِto the heart فاتَmiss وَإِنّماbut rather
وَلَم أَرَهُ لِلقَلبِ فاتَ وَإِنّما
سَمِعتُI heard بِأُذنيwith my ear رَنَّةَthe ring of السّهمِthe arrow فيin قَلبيmy heart
سَمِعتُ بِأُذني رَنَّةَ السّهمِ في قَلبي
And I did not see it miss the heart; rather,
And I did not see it pierce my heart, it only grazed me
I heard with my ear the ring of the arrow in my heart.
But I heard with my ears the twang of the arrow in my heart
