رَأىhe saw جُرحَwound قَلبيmy heart مِنfrom سِهامِarrows جُفونِهِhis eyelids
رَأى جُرحَ قَلبي مِن سِهامِ جُفونِهِ
فَقالَso he said بَليغٌgrievous موجبٌcausing للبوارِdeath
فَقالَ بَليغٌ موجبٌ للبوارِ
He saw my heart’s wound from the arrows of his eyelids,
He saw my heart's wound from the arrows of his eyelashes
and said, “A grievous wound, certain to bring death.”
So an eloquent one deemed me worthy of calamity
وَقَدand indeed رامَhe sought قَتليkilling me أَنthat أَموتI die سِرايةًthrough the wound’s spread
وَقَد رامَ قَتلي أَن أَموت سِرايةً
فَشَممنيso he made me smell وَاللّهby God مِسكmusk العذارِthe cheek-down
فَشَممني وَاللّه مِسك العذارِ
And he had sought to kill me, that I might die as the wound spread,
And he wanted me dead in secret
so, by God, he made me smell the musk of his cheek-down.
Yet, by God, he smelled me with the musk of chastity
