جَسَّhe felt نَبضَthe pulse of القانونِthe qanun (a zither) إِذwhen كانَit was مَيتاًdead
جَسَّ نَبضَ القانونِ إِذ كانَ مَيتاً
قُلتُI said رُدَّتwas restored لَهُto it الحياةُlife بِظَنّيin my estimation
قُلتُ رُدَّت لَهُ الحياةُ بِظَنّي
He felt the qanun's pulse when it was dead.
My pulse quickened when law was dead
I said, "Life has been restored to it, I think."
I thought that life was restored, I said
فَإِذاthen behold بِالقانونِthere was the qanun قَدalready صارَhad become حيّاًalive
فَإِذا بِالقانونِ قَد صارَ حيّاً
فَرحاًjoyful بِالحَياةِat life قامَit rose يُغنِّيsinging
فَرحاً بِالحَياةِ قامَ يُغنِّي
Then behold, the qanun had come alive.
Lo and behold, the law lives anew
Joyful at life, it rose and sang.
With joy for life, it began to croon
