كَسبَhe attained السّيادَةَeminence بِالمُروءَةِthrough noble character وَالتّقىand piety
كَسبَ السّيادَةَ بِالمُروءَةِ وَالتّقى
ماnot بِالدنانيرِthrough dinars اِعتِلاءُelevation of الشّانِstanding
ما بِالدنانيرِ اِعتِلاءُ الشّانِ
He attained eminence through noble character and piety.
He gained supremacy through virtue and piety
It is not through dinars that one rises in standing.
Not through wealth did he attain glory
فَأَخوfor a man of الغَباوةِfoolishness لِلدراهِمِof dirhams عابِدٌa worshipper
فَأَخو الغَباوةِ لِلدراهِمِ عابِدٌ
وَأَخوand a man of الفَطانَةِdiscernment عابدُa worshipper of الرَّحمَنِthe Most Merciful
وَأَخو الفَطانَةِ عابدُ الرَّحمَنِ
For the foolish man is a worshipper of dirhams,
So the foolish worship coins
while the discerning man is a worshipper of the Most Merciful.
While the wise worship the Merciful
