قَدindeed جِيءwas brought ليto me مِنfrom نِعالِsandals الحِبِّthe beloved ياO حَزنيmy sorrow
قَد جِيء لي مِن نِعالِ الحِبِّ يا حَزني
مِنَfrom النّوىdistance بِغبارٍwith dust كانَwas ملتمسيwhat I sought
مِنَ النّوى بِغبارٍ كانَ ملتمسي
From the beloved’s sandals was brought to me—O my sorrow—
The sandals of love have brought me, O my grief,
from afar, dust that I had sought.
Dust from the campsite that once sheltered me.
شَمَمتُهI smelled it خِدنَa companion of وَجدٍlonging حابِساًholding back نَفسيmy breath
شَمَمتُه خِدنَ وَجدٍ حابِساً نَفسي
حَتّىuntil قَضيتI died بِشَمِّيthrough my smelling حابِسَholding back النّفسِthe breath
حَتّى قَضيت بِشَمِّي حابِسَ النّفسِ
I smelled it, a companion of longing, holding my breath,
I inhaled its scent of tender affection
until I died from smelling it, still holding my breath.
Till with that scent I tamed my captured breath.
