    O Ahnaf of forbearance, whose

    forbearance has made order sound,

O you who emulate al-Ashajj's justice

    through your justice among humankind,

    O pride of ministers, O

crown of the noble and the eminent,

O you, the minister who rises

above al-Suha, a moon at the full,

    O lion, mighty lion,

and bearer of lances and the sword,

O possessor of a tender heart,

and you, the noble, valiant man,

    Grant pardon, companion of mercy,

for pardon is the practice of the great.

    لا شَكّ في هَذا الكَلام

    My Lord, the All-Pardoning, loves it;

there is no doubt about these words.

And forgive, companion of noble virtues,

for forgiveness is among the traits of the noble.

    إِنّي رَقيقك وَالغُلام

    Indeed, I am your humble servant, my master;

indeed, I am your bondman and serving-boy.

    I hope for your mercies,

through hope of which the goal is attained,

by pardoning those who were sent,

    with earnestness, then diligence,

    by sea to Arwad, where

    their quarters are cramped,

    under your lofty, noble command—

and that is sharper than a sword.

    Enough to deter them are

    imprisonment and exile, with reproach,

whether it is true of them, or whether

    that report is untrue.

Then have mercy on their children,

in whose throats food is bitter.

And gain the prayers of their children

    and their dependents—what a gain!

And be forbearing; graciously return them,

O sea of forbearance among humankind.

And soothe the heart of one who hopes

for this retribution to be lifted.

For he has indeed ventured to hope,

and its acceptance is the very goal.

Indeed, concerning intercession there has come

the finest speech about its merit.

You have made me hopeful of forbearance,

and forbearance is hoped for. Peace.

May my Lord preserve you always,

and may the Lord sustain you—sustain you!

And may He perpetuate your rule, under which

the noble have lived in justice,

and always grant you within it

    good order and regularity,

as long as a bough sways upon the hills,

as long as doves sing above it.

And I ask God that He

    graciously grant a good ending.
