أَياO حُسنَbeauty of وَجديmy yearning لَوif only خلَوتI were free عَنِfrom النّوىseparation
وياand O حَرَّheat of وَجديmy yearning لوif كَوَتنيseared me لَظىthe blaze of الجَفاestrangement
How sweet my yearning would be, were I free of separation!
And how fierce my yearning's heat, should estrangement's blaze sear me!
أَهيمُI wander distraught علىamid الأَشجانِsorrows فيin كلِّevery مَهمَهٍtrackless desert
I converse by night with وَحشَwild beasts of القَفرِthe wilderness وَالظبيَand the gazelle وَالمَهاand the oryx
I wander sorrow-stricken through every trackless waste,
Conversing by night with desert beasts, the gazelle, and the oryx.
أُساهرُI keep vigil with نَجمَthe star of اللَّيلِthe night وَالنَّجمُand the star سائِرٌis journeying
كَسَمعِيَlike my hearing بِالعَنقاءِof the Anqa سَمعِيَmy hearing بِالكَرىof sleep
I keep vigil with the night star as it journeys on;
Sleep is only hearsay to me, like the fabled Anqa.
أُقَدِّمI put forward لِلسّلوانِtoward forgetting رِجلاًa foot فَأَنثَنيthen I turn back
وَماand not زالَhas ceased يُثنينيturning me back الغَرامُpassion إِلىtoward الوَراthe rear
I put one foot toward forgetting, then turn back;
And passion never ceases to draw me backward.
أَجوبُI traverse الفَيافيthe deserts وَالدِّيارُand the dwellings بَعيدَةٌare distant
وَإِنَّand indeed بَعيدَone with a distant القَصدِgoal يُتعِبُهُwearies him السُّرىnight travel
I traverse the deserts while the dwellings lie far away;
And night travel wearies one whose goal is distant.
أَطوفُI roam وَلاand no مَأوىshelter يَكونُexists لِهائِمٍfor a wanderer
وَأَمشيand I walk وَلاand not أُهدىam I guided لِمُنعرجِto the bend of اللِّوىal-Liwa
I roam, and there is no shelter for a wanderer;
And I walk, unguided to the bend of al-Liwa.
فَياso O خَيبَةَfailure of المَسعىthe striving وياand O ضَيعَةَwaste of السُّرىnight travel
وَياand O شقوةَmisery of السّاعيthe seeker إِذاwhen فاتَهُelude him المُنىhopes
So alas for futile striving and wasted night journeys!
And alas for the seeker's misery when his hopes elude him!
أَدورُI circle وَأَمشيand I walk لاnot أُجاوِزُdo I go beyond مَوضِعيmy place
وَإِنّيand indeed I بِهذاin this الحالِstate تُشبِهُنيresembles me الرّحىthe millstone
I circle and walk, yet never move beyond my place;
And in this state, I am like a millstone.
وَلَيسَand there is no أَنيسٌcompanion تَنجَليis dispelled فيهِthrough him وَحشَتيmy loneliness
وَلَيسَand there is no سَميرٌnight companion بِالحَديثِin conversation عَنِabout الهَوىlove
There is no companion through whom my loneliness is dispelled,
And no night companion for conversation about love.
وَقَدand indeed كانَthere was ليfor me قَلبٌa heart وَكانَand it was مُسامِريmy night companion
وَقَدand indeed طارَflew away قَلبيmy heart حينَwhen مَزَّقهُtore it apart الجَوىlove's anguish
I once had a heart, and it was my companion by night;
And my heart flew away when love's anguish tore it apart.
فَجِسميso my body بِلاwithout قَلبٍa heart وَعَينيand my eye بِلاwithout ضِياlight
وَأُذنيand my ear بِلاwithout سَمعٍhearing وَصَدريand my breast بِلاwithout حَشاentrails
So my body is without a heart, and my eye without light,
And my ear without hearing, and my breast without entrails.
فَهَلso is there مِنany دَليلٍguide يَغنمُwho gains الأَجرَthe reward وَالدعاand prayers
وَيَكتَسِبُand earns الحُسنىthe finest reward بِدارٍin an abode بِهاin which الجَزاis recompense
Is there, then, a guide who would gain reward and prayers,
And win the finest reward in the abode of recompense,
يَدلُّwho guides أَخاone afflicted by تِيهٍbewilderment علىto دارthe abode of جِلَّقٍJilliq
فَتِلكَfor that place بِهاin it الأَفراحُare joys وَالأُنسُand companionship وَالصّفاand serenity
Who would guide a lost wanderer to the abode of Jilliq?
For there are joys, companionship, and serenity.
مَتىwhenever شِمتُهاI glimpse it يَشفىis healed فُؤاديmy heart وَمُهجَتيand my soul
وَتَكحلُand lines with kohl عَينيmy eye بِالسُّرورِwith joy وَبِالهَناand with bliss
Whenever I glimpse it, my heart and soul are healed,
And it lines my eye with the kohl of joy and bliss.
