I offer the Imam, Abid al-Rahman,

a greeting from our Lord, the Bountiful Giver,

and the fullest peace from a loving friend,

and all that is pure in prayer from the heart,

and the fairest praise and commendation,

in every fine and eloquent word.

And I lament such burning longings

as the inner spaces of pages cannot contain.

And now, here is what is submitted to Your Honor,

    after kissing the noblest thresholds,

and after kissing the hands and the foot,

from the yearning one, clad in the robe of nothingness:

    فسرَّني ونِلت منه الأمَلا

    Indeed, your letter has reached us;

    so it delighted me, and from it I gained what I hoped for;

and it surrounded me with precious pearls,

    and gladdened sorrowful hearts.

I read it with the tongues of thought,

and beheld the virgin ideas it contained.

So from its meanings I sipped sugar,

and from its wording I gathered gems.

Rather, I inhaled musk from its seal,

and beheld the garden of beauty in its composition.

And I have praised God, possessed of majesty,

    and bounty, beneficence, and gifts.

And all to which the master alluded,

I understood; it is present in my mind.

Nor does any of it recede from my mind—

not a thing, for that would be impossible.

Rather, it remains dwelling in my thoughts,

like the generous master of lofty resolve.

And I act upon what it contains,

and I hope for what I have sought.

Rather, that is the ultimate aim,

and it remains in being through all time.

And indeed I entreat Your Honor

to refrain from such an address,

for I am not worthy of it,

and this from you is beyond the station of one like me.

For I am affiliated with you,

and I am reckoned as one of your own.

And may God reward you with the finest good,

in His grace, and shield you from all harm.

And I hope to be honored by your correspondence,

for it is among the fullest forms of fellowship,

and that I may be among your dearest thoughts,

within your noble mind and memory.

And that you convey my fullest greetings of peace

to my master, the fair-minded teacher.

And indeed I kiss his feet,

and have ever been his servant among humankind.

And I hope for his benevolent prayers,

and I hope for his exalted approval.

And I hope you will convey my greetings

to your brother, together with your noble sons,

then to the loved ones and the brethren,

and our friends, along with close companions.

    And this composed rajaz poem

    has come untouched by eloquence—

the verse of a dull, helpless, feeble man:

I mean the poor one, Abid al-Latif,

I mean Ibn Fath Allah—God, Lord of blessings,

and of bounty, beneficence, and giving.

It has come to you, hoping for acceptance as a favor,

and kisses your generous hand on our behalf.

And be safe, and ever remain in glory and honor,

as long as the closing ambergris wafts its scent.
