مَنَنتُمyou held your favors over others بِماwith what جُدتُمyou gave generously فَلاso may not كانَhave been جُودكمُyour generosity
مَنَنتُم بِما جُدتُم فَلا كانَ جُودكمُ
وَلاand may not كانَbe مَنthe one whom جُدتُمyou gave generously عَلَيهِto him لَكُمfor you يَهوىhe feels love
وَلا كانَ مَن جُدتُم عَلَيهِ لَكُم يَهوى
You made your gifts a reproach—may your generosity never have been!
And may the one you favored never love you.
سَلاكُمhe forgot you فَماso how أَحلىsweet وَأَحرىand fitting سُلُوَّهhis forgetting
سَلاكُم فَما أَحلى وَأَحرى سُلُوَّه
وَإِنّيَand indeed I عِندَwhen faced with المَنِّreproachful reminders of favors أَستَحسِنُI find commendable السّلوىforgetting past love
وَإِنّيَ عِندَ المَنِّ أَستَحسِنُ السّلوى
He has forgotten you—how sweet and fitting his forgetting!
And I, when favors are held over one, find forgetting commendable.
