أَمِنْis it from بَعدِafter بَينِparting from الحِبِّthe beloved أَبعدَكhas driven you away البينُseparation
وَبَعدَand after الفَناannihilation فيin الحبِّlove يَحبِسُكholds you captive الدّينُdebt
After parting from the beloved, has separation driven you farther away?
And after being consumed by love, does debt hold you captive?
أَصابَكَhas struck you سِحرٌmagic أَمor سِعايةُthe slander of عاذِلٍa reproacher
يَرومُhe seeks اِفتِراقاًseparation أَمor أصابَتhas struck لَكَagainst you العَينُthe evil eye
Has magic struck you, or the slander of a reproacher
Who seeks a parting—or has the evil eye struck you?
فَماfor ... is nothing هَذِهِthis إِلّاbut بِليّةُthe affliction of مُغرَمٍa lovesick lover
أَضرَّتhave harmed بِهِhim الأَشواقُlongings وَاِستَحكَمَand took firm hold البينُseparation
For this is nothing but a lover's affliction:
Longings have harmed him, and separation has tightened its hold.
أَذابَmelted الجَوىlove's anguish مِنهُof him الفُؤادَthe heart وَجِسمَهُand his body
وَقَدand indeed عَمَّengulfed بِالبَلوىwith affliction وَحاطَand encircled بِهِhim الحَيْنُdoom
Love's anguish has melted his heart and his body,
And doom has engulfed him in affliction and hemmed him in.
عَلىover قَلبِهِhis heart قَدindeed غِينwas veiled مِنfrom عَينِthe eye of بعدهhis estrangement
وَخُطَّand was inscribed بِحِبرِwith the ink of الفَمِّthe mouth فيin قَلبِهhis heart الغينُgloom
His heart has been veiled by the eye of his estrangement,
And gloom was inscribed in his heart with the mouth's ink.
أَضَرَّتhave harmed بِهِhim الأَهوالُterrors وَاِستَحكَمَand took firm hold الرّدىdeath
وَخانَتand betrayed لَهُhim الأيّامُthe days وَاِستَحكَمand took firm hold الخَونُtreachery
Terrors have harmed him, and death has tightened its grip;
The days have betrayed him, and treachery has taken firm hold.
وَلَيسَand there is no لَهُfor him مِنany ناصِرٍhelper كانَwas يُرتَجىhoped for
وَلَيسَand not عَلىthroughout الأَيّامِthe days يَبدوappears لَهfor him عَونُhelp
And he has no helper in whom to place his hope,
Nor does any aid appear for him through the passing days.
أَجلْyes بانَappeared ليto me حِصنٌa fortress لَهto him صِرْتُI have come to أَلتَجيseek refuge
مِنَamong السّادةِthe lords الغُرِّthe illustrious الكرامِthe generous هوَhe is العينُthe foremost
Yes, a fortress has appeared to me; in him I now seek refuge.
Among the illustrious, generous lords, he is the foremost:
أَبوfather of النَّصرِvictory مَنْwho لِلفَتحِof conquest أَصبَحَhas become مالِكاًmaster
وَإِنّيand I am indeed لَهُhis دونَapart from الوَرىall mankind القِنُّthe bondslave والقَيْنُand the servant
Abu al-Nasr, who has become master of conquest;
And I, apart from all other mortals, am his bondslave and servant.
لَقَدindeed شِمتُهI beheld him بَدراًas a full moon جَلاthat dispelled كُلَّevery غُمَّةٍgloom
لَعمرُكَby your life إنّindeed البدرَthe full moon يُجلىis dispelled بهby it الغينُgloom
Indeed, I beheld him as a full moon that dispelled every gloom;
By your life, through the full moon gloom is dispelled.
وَإِنand if قِستَهyou compare him بِالبَدرِwith the full moon وَالبَدرُand the full moon عَبدُهُhis slave
وَقَدand indeed بانَbecame clear ليto me فَرقٌa difference فَبينَهُماfor between the two of them بَوْنُa gulf
And if you compare him with the full moon—though the moon is his slave—
A difference is clear to me: a gulf lies between them.
مَهيبٌawe-inspiring لَقَدindeed تَمَّتbecame complete جَلالةُthe majesty of قَدْرِهِhis rank
وَقَدand indeed زانَهاhas adorned it حِلمٌforbearance كَماjust as زانَهاhas adorned it هَونُgentleness
Awe-inspiring, he has attained the full majesty of his rank,
And forbearance has adorned it, as has gentleness.
وَلَمand not يَكُbe غَيرَother than الصفوِserenity وَالسعدِand good fortune وقتُهhis time
وَلَيسَand there is no لَهُfor him غيرَexcept العلىthe heights والسُّهىand Suha أينُabode
And his time has been nothing but serenity and good fortune,
And his only abode is the heights and Suha.
وَلَيسَand there is no بِهِin him عيبٌfault وَمَنand whoever كانَwas زاعِماًalleging
لِعَيبٍof a fault بِهِin him فَهوَthen he is الَّذيthe one whose زَعمُهُhis allegation المَينُfalsehood
And he has no fault; whoever alleges
A fault in him is one whose allegation is a lie.
عَلىnotwithstanding أَنّthat عَيباًa fault لِلفَتىof a young man فيamid حسانِهِhis fine qualities

Yet a young man's fault amid his fine qualities
Is reckoned as nonexistent, with no trace of it.
عَلىnotwithstanding أَنّthat عَيبَthe fault of المَرءِa person بَينَamong مَحاسِنٍfine qualities
جَميلٌbeautiful بِهِthrough it قَدmay يكملُbe perfected الحسنُbeauty والزينُand grace
Yet a man's fault among his virtues
Is beautiful: through it beauty and grace may be perfected.
وَماand not ضَرَّhas harmed حُسنَthe beauty of البدرِthe full moon مُسْوَدُّthe darkness of بَعضِهِpart of it
وَقَدand indeed جَعلوهُthey deemed it أَنّهthat it is الحسنُbeauty الزينُadornment
Nor has the darkness on part of the full moon marred its beauty;
Indeed, they have deemed it beauty and adornment.
أَلَستَdo you not تَرىsee حسنَthe beauty of الشقيقِthe anemone بِنُقطَةٍwith a dot
وَإِنْand although قَدindeed بَدَتit appeared سَوداءَblack قَدindeed فاتَهاhas passed it by الشينُugliness
Do you not see the anemone's beauty, with its dot,
Though it appears black, untouched by ugliness?
وَكَمand how many وَجنَةٍa cheek بِالخالِthrough a mole كانَwas جَمالُهاits beauty
وَلَولاand were it not for سَوادُthe blackness of العَينِthe eye لَمwould not تحسنbe beautiful العينُthe eye
And how many a cheek owes its beauty to a mole!
And but for the eye's blackness, the eye would not be fair.
عَليهupon him سَلامُthe peace of اللَّهِGod ماas long as اِسوَدَّgrows black غاسِقٌa dark night

وَماand as long as ضاءَتِshine الآفاقُthe horizons بِالشَّمسِwith the sun وَالكونُand the universe
Upon him be God's peace as long as night turns black,
And as long as the horizons and the universe shine with the sun.
