أَرىI see الشّمسَthe sun سُلطاناًa sultan لَقَدindeed دامَhas endured مُلكُهhis reign
وَماand not القَمَرُthe moon المَعروفُwell-known إِلّاexcept وَزيرُهُhis minister
I see the sun as a sultan; his reign has indeed endured.
And the familiar moon is nothing but his minister.
يُوَلّيهِhe appoints him حُكمَrule over اللّيلِthe night مِنfor أَجلِthe sake of راحَةٍrest
وَيَحكُمُand he rules فيماin whatever فيهِin it يَبدوappears ظهورهُhis appearance
He appoints him to rule the night, for the sake of rest.
And he rules wherever his presence is seen.
يُوَلّيهِhe appoints him شَهراًfor a month ثمَّthen ينصبhe installs غَيرهsomeone other than him
وَيَعزِلُهُand he dismisses him غَضبانangry ثمّthen يُبيرُهُhe destroys him
He appoints him for a month, then installs another.
And dismisses him in anger, then destroys him.
وَحينَand when يُولِّيهِhe appoints him يقوّيهِhe strengthens him راضِياًwell pleased
إِلىuntil أَنthat يَصيرَbecomes البدرُthe full moon قّدalready تَمَّhas become complete نورُهُhis light
And when he appoints him, he strengthens him, well pleased,
Until the full moon's light is complete.
يَعودُhe returns عَلَيهِagainst him غَيرnot راضٍcontent بِضَعفِهِwith his weakness
وَسَلبِand stripping away الّذيwhat أَولىhe bestowed فَتوهىso grow feeble أُمورهُhis affairs
He turns against him, not content with his weakness,
And the stripping away of what he bestowed, so his affairs falter.
وَعِندَand at اِنقِضاءِthe end of الشرّevil يَحكُمُhe sentences بِالرّدىto death
فَيُرديهِso he slays him غَضباناًenraged وَيَأتيand comes نَظيرهُhis counterpart
And when evil comes to an end, he sentences him to death.
So, enraged, he slays him, and his counterpart comes.
وَذاand this حالُthe way of ذاthis السّلطانthe sultan مِنsince حينthe time ماthat اِنتَشاhe arose
وَأَوجدَهُand brought him into being رَبٌّa Lord إِلَيهِto Him مَصيرُهُhis return
And such has been this sultan's way since he arose,
And a Lord brought him into being, to whom he shall return.
