Why is man deluded by the soul's hope

Of lasting life, when he is nearer to the grave?

And why does the soul turn, though it knows full well,

Toward what perishes and leads to misery,

And abandon what endures—and that is certain—

And cling to the illusory, amid conjecture's delusion?

Like one who sells the choicest pearls for a paltry price.

Is deluded, and is dealt the opposite.

Among the noble masters, pure of the stain of defilement?

Pouncing upon allotted lifespans with ferocious might?

Does he not know the people's loss of the master of creation?

Does he not know al-Sham's loss of Yusuf al-Shamsi?

    وَمَن كانَ ضَوءَ الشّمسِ يُنسَبُ لِلشّمسِ

    The beauty of Damascus of al-Sham—rather, the light of its sun;

And whoever is the sun's light is ascribed to the sun.

And she boasted over Egypt of his congenial nature.

Illumination came in succession from the Holy Presence.

    وَإِنَّ جَمالَ القَومِ في الصَّدرِ وَالرَّأسِ

    He is the breast of the noble folk, and their head;

And a people's beauty lies in its breast and head.

To the utmost limit, and he was exalted above all diminution.

Upon a height built on the noblest foundation.

How greatly species are ennobled by the nobility of their genus!

And who will revive the schools through teaching?

That is why the sun's sky weeps for the sun.

The sun appears above me, until evening finds me.

And on my cheeks I write, with tears from my eye,

A wondrous page, in blackness from my heart.

Nor may my garden of grief ever wither.

    وَما اِتصفَ الأَصوات بِالجهرِ وَالهَمسِ

    And as long as voices sound aloud and in whispers;

And whenever Ibn Fath Allah recites in tears:

Why is man deluded by the soul's hope?
