Death's decree prevails over all creation,
And in its midst, the fates of death trade volleys of arrows.

And there the raven of separation croaks of parting.

So perish the hands of Time, which struck with its arrow
A full moon by whose light the eastern horizons once shone.

Lofty in character, a son of noble deeds and generosity,
A noble hero by whom lofty noses were humbled.

The crescent of glory vanished the moment it rose in radiance;
For this I am seen choking on tears.

The worlds grew black at his departure,
Just as hair-partings had whitened before him.

Stop, you two: let us weep for him one year, and mourn him another,
And throbbing hearts within us lament him.

And turn aside, you two, to a grave that has embraced his body;
From it a fragrance wafts for whoever breathes it in.
فَياso O أَيّهاO you الدّهرُTime الّذيwho كانَwas عَبدَهُhis slave
لَقَدindeed خُنْتَyou betrayed مَولىًa master مِنهُof him تَخشىfear الخَلايقُall creatures
So, O Time, you who were once his slave,
You have indeed betrayed a master whom all creatures fear.
مَددتَyou extended لَهُtoward him أَيديthe hands of المَنِيّةِdeath غادِراًtreacherously
وَأَنتَwhile you لَهtoward him صافيpure in المَودّةِaffection رايقُunclouded
Treacherously, you stretched the hands of death toward him,
Though your affection for him was pure and unclouded.

وَلَيسَnor لَهُto it يَوماًever تَطولُreach اللَّواحِقُthose who follow
And you attained a goal no predecessors had attained,
Nor will those who follow ever reach it.

وَمِنْand from بَينِناour midst عِقدَthe necklace of الكَمالاتِperfections سارقُstealing
So shame upon it, an age that scatters our company,
And steals from our midst the necklace of perfections.
فَياso O أَيُّهاO you المَولىmaster الَّذيwho جَدَّpressed on سايراًjourneying

إِلىto جَنَّةٍa garden لِلحُورِwith the houris فيهاin it يُعانقُhe exchanges embraces
So, O master, who hastened on your way
To a garden where you exchange embraces with the houris,
دُعيتَyou were summoned إِلىto أَمرٍa matter فَلَبَّيْتَso you answered the call عاجِلاًpromptly

You were summoned to a matter, and swiftly answered the call,
Responding, while the swift steeds galloped before you.
وَعَجّلتَand you hastened فيناamong us بِالتَفرُّقِwith parting مُسرعاًhurrying
وَقَدthough indeed كانَhad been مِنّاfor us قَدindeed يعزّhard to bear التفارُقُparting
And you hastened separation among us, speeding away,
Though parting had been so hard for us.
عَلَيكَupon you رِضاءُthe favor of اللَّهِGod ماas long as ناحَlaments طائرٌa bird
وماand as long as طَلعَتrises شَمسٌthe sun وَماand as long as اِسوَدَّgrows black غاسِقُthe dark night
May God's favor rest upon you as long as a bird laments,
And as long as the sun rises and night grows black.
