قاضٍa judge يَرىdeems قَدرَthe rank of الشَّريعَةِthe Sharia عالِياًexalted
قاضٍ يَرى قَدرَ الشَّريعَةِ عالِياً
وَبِرَفعِهاand on raising it (also: setting it aside) وَقتَduring الخصومَةِthe dispute يجزُمُhe firmly resolves
وَبِرَفعِها وَقتَ الخصومَةِ يجزُمُ
A judge who deems the Sharia's rank exalted,
Yet firmly resolves to set it aside during disputes.
مَنwhoever يُعطِهِgives him عَيناًa coin (also: an eye) يجلُّis honored وَعِندَهُand in his view
مَن يُعطِهِ عَيناً يجلُّ وَعِندَهُ
مِنfor أَجلِthe sake of عينٍone eye (punning on a coin) أَلفُa thousand عَينٍeyes تكرمُare honored
مِن أَجلِ عينٍ أَلفُ عَينٍ تكرمُ
Whoever gives him a coin is honored; in his view,
For the sake of one eye, a thousand eyes are honored.
