Grant me union, for I am the faithful lover.

There is no escape for him from the captivity of your love.

How can one escape passion, when it is

    by its very nature inescapable?

O son of beauty and splendor, I am a man

among those sincere in their passionate love for you.

Why have you singled out another for union,

and why am I singled out for your coldness?

No other, in longing and passion,

among lovers was so intent on love.

    Were another eager for love,

I am the lover most eager for your love.

I do not recall ever seeing anyone renounce passion:

a lovesick man in its grip retreating on his heels.

Has the lover turned from passion through forgetfulness?

Whoever turns back is a liar and speaks falsehood.

And in the eyes—the eyes of love's masters—

he surely sinks and loses standing in love.

And they shunned him as though, among them,

he were surely mangy—nay, bald and leprous.

O sun of beauty, whose light is loveliness,

all full moons wane when they behold her.

And when you rise, every heart in love

claps and dances in the ecstasy of passion.

I am a man whose solace has died; and in

the house of passion I am bound to observe a term of waiting.

    إِنّ السلوَّ فَعنهُ حظّي يقلصُ

    So beware lest the thought of my forgetting cross your mind;

for my lot draws away from forgetfulness.

My lot is love and yearning for you; I have a way

that sums up my state of longing and passion.

    وَعَلى الرّقيقِ مِنَ التغَزُّلِ أَفحصُ

    My amatory verse and love poetry about you have grown tender;

and I search for what is delicate in love poetry.

I seek the uncommon, with eloquence and fluency,

as I select it and give it form in imagination.

    بَل قلَّ مِنهُ إِنّني أَتَخلَّصُ

    No transition from it to anything else has pleased me;

indeed, I seldom free myself from it.

How fine is love verse on beauty and the beautiful!

Sweet is the passage from it to lavish praise.

    Yet always, from it to

my praise of Ali, the passage delights me.

Sun of perfection, rising to Suha's zenith,

whose sole has trodden that height in pursuit of eminence.

Builder of glory's towers above Suha's peaks,

plastered with nobility by the hand of good fortune.

He in whose glory the noble have been crowned,

he in whose might loftiness clothes itself.

Lord of tall spears and keen swords: however precious

lions' lifeblood may be, before him it grows cheap.

Never has he moved in battle, dueling,

without the lions' eyes staring, transfixed.

A lion: the lions of al-Shara flee in fear

from him, intent on flight and escape.

So in battle they are like falsehood,

and he like manifest truth, coming to light.

Ma'n of generosity, sea of bounty, lord of gifts,

whose generosity is devoted purely to God.

Whose forbearance is a mountain, so firmly rooted

that nothing arising in time can shake it.

May he ever remain a perfect full moon of eminence,

    his eclipse impossible, never waning.

And may he endure, radiant in might and good fortune,

and live the happiest life, untroubled,

as long as lightning flashes, as long as the stars in darkness

    dance at evening in mantles of light;

rather, as long as the lovesick lover says to his beloved:

Grant me union, for I am the faithful lover.
