لمّاwhen بَداappeared العِذارُthe cheek-down فيon وَجهِهِhis face
قالَsaid العَذولُthe reprover صَحَّcame true ليfor me مَطلبيmy wish
When down appeared upon his face,
the reprover said, “My wish has come true:
فَإِنْfor if شَمسُthe sun الحسنِof beauty غابَتhas set فَلَمthen did not
يَبقَremain لِمَنfor whoever يَهواهُloves him مِنْany مأربِdesire
for if the sun of beauty has set, then no
desire remains for the one who loves him.”
وَظَنَّand he thought فيهاabout it أَنthat لَمhad not تعُدreturn
وَأَنّنيand that I اِرعَويتُhad desisted ظَنَّthe thought الغَبيof a fool
And he thought it had not returned,
and that I had desisted—a fool’s thought.
فَالشَّمسُfor the sun قَدmay تَطلعrise مِنهfrom him أمَاmight not …?
قَدmay تَطلُعُrise الشَّمسُthe sun مِنَfrom المَغربِthe west
For the sun may rise from him—might not
the sun rise from the west?
