قَدindeed صَفتhas cleared ليfor me كدورُthe murk of دَهريmy times العَنيفِharsh
بعدَafter ضَنىًwasting illness بظلِّin the shade of عَيشٍa life وريفِlush
Indeed, the murk of my harsh times has cleared for me,
After wasting illness, in the shade of a lush life.
قُلتI said إِذْwhen خَصّنيit favored me بِأمرٍwith something ظَريفِdelightful
نَظَمunited الدَّهرُTime شَملَناour company بِلَطيفِwith a gracious man
I said, when it favored me with something delightful:
Time has united us with a gracious man,
جَمعَcombined الفَضلَvirtue وَالحِجىand wisdom والإفادَهْand beneficence
سيّدٌa lord حازَpossessed كلَّall فخرٍhonor وحلمِand forbearance
Who combined virtue, wisdom, and beneficence.
A lord possessed of all honor and forbearance,
قمرٌa moon ينجليis dispelled بهthrough him كلُّevery هَمِّcare
قُلتُI said مُذsince حَلَّhe entered بُرجَa constellation of عِزٍّglory بِحَزمِwith resolve
A moon through whom every care is dispelled.
I said, when he entered a constellation of glory with resolve:
لاdo not تَعجَبْmarvel إِنif لاحَshines forth أَسعَدُthe most auspicious نَجمِstar
فَهوَfor he فيamong النَّاسِpeople نَيّرٌa luminary وَزِيادَهand more besides
Do not marvel if the most auspicious star shines forth,
For among people he is a luminary—and more besides.
