وَخالٍ يُحاكي المِسكَ وَالنّدَّ إِذ بَدا
بِياقوتِon the ruby of خَدّيthe two cheeks of مَنone who حَوىpossessed لطفَcharm of تَحديثِspeech
بِياقوتِ خَدّي مَن حَوى لطفَ تَحديثِ
And a beauty mark, like musk and fragrant incense as it appeared
His cheek bears a mole that vies musk and ambergris with its scent
on the ruby cheeks of one endowed with charming speech,
Ruby of his cheek that harbors the charm of speech
وَلاand no شَكّdoubt بِالتّعصيبِthrough agnatic succession أَورَثَنيit bequeathed me الضّناwasting sickness
وَلا شَكّ بِالتّعصيبِ أَورَثَني الضّنا
وَعِلميَand my knowledge أَنَّthat الخالَthe beauty mark (also: maternal uncle) لَيسَis not بِمَوروثِsomething inherited
وَعِلميَ أَنَّ الخالَ لَيسَ بِمَوروثِ
surely bequeathed me wasting sickness through agnatic succession,
Undoubtedly, binding has bequeathed me yearning
though I know a beauty mark is not something inherited.
And my knowledge that the mole is not inherited
