إِنّindeed الكَريمَthe noble man إِذاwhen مَدحتَyou praise خِصالَهُhis qualities
إِنّ الكَريمَ إِذا مَدحتَ خِصالَهُ
فَمِنَthen out of الحَياءِmodesty يودّhe wishes أَنْthat لمnot يمدحِhe was praised
فَمِنَ الحَياءِ يودّ أَنْ لم يمدحِ
Indeed, when you praise a noble man's qualities,
When you praise the noble one's virtues
out of modesty he wishes he had not been praised.
Out of modesty he wishes you hadn't praised him
أَمّاas for اللّئيمُthe base man إِذاwhen ذَممتَyou censure خِصالَهُhis qualities
أَمّا اللّئيمُ إِذا ذَممتَ خِصالَهُ
خَلَعَhe casts off الحَياءَmodesty وَلَمand not يَكُنhe was بِالمُستَحيat all ashamed
خَلَعَ الحَياءَ وَلَم يَكُن بِالمُستَحي
But when you censure a base man's qualities,
But when you criticize the ignoble one's faults
he casts off modesty and feels no shame.
He casts off all shame, no longer bashful
