From honor's horizon the sun of glory has risen,

And in the sky of eminence her lights have shone.

Welcome to her, arriving radiant in Beirut!

Flashes of her light have gleamed above the city.

And above its quarters, by God, for joy,

The doves of gladness have sung and cooed.

Her rays filled its quarters, until it became

A light that outshone the moons and rose high.

Shoulder to shoulder, it rivaled Suha's zenith and soared,

And in its ascent aspired above Suha's highest reach.

It swayed its waist and sleeves in dance,

And frolicked for joy in the garden of bliss.

It sang to its people, “Rise, dance for joy,

And join me, for today my sun has returned.”

The sun of high distinction, in glory's light, exalted

By good fortune, with which the horizons have brimmed.

Lord of radiance: the moons cannot match

The lights of his eminence when they rose in the universe.

Perfection's companion, exalted in rank through honor,

The banners of his lordship have been raised for glory.

His white swords were neither blunted nor nicked

By cleaving foes' heads, however often they cleaved.

Since first they came to be, they have known no weaning,

And have suckled nothing but their enemies' blood.

Lion of the lair, lion of battle, a hero—

How many lions' heads have bowed before him!

He journeyed under the protection of his lord and master,

Heading for Acre, which was founded for honor.

    بِها المَيامِنُ حَلَّت ما إِلَيهِ سَعَت

    He strode toward her, his endeavor blessed;

Blessings alighted on his foot, wherever it went.

There he received such honor that words fell short

Of expressing it, whether brief or expansive.

    وَالعَينُ لَم تَره وَالأذنُ ما سَمِعَت

    Nothing like it had ever crossed his mind;

No eye had seen it, nor had any ear heard.

He returned from there to Beirut, rejoicing,

With gladdened eyes that plucked and grazed on wishes' flowers.

Just as he had left her, he returned—a lion of Shara,

From whom the lions turned away in fright.

In honor's procession, with eminence bearing him,

Adorned in glory's garments and clad in them as armor.

O lion of the thickets, to whom the lions have bowed!

To none but him have the lions ever bowed.

You left Beirut desolate when you went away,

Toward Acre, which had gathered good fortune.

    لَولاهُ كانَت مِنَ الإِيحاشِ ما هَجَعَت

    Yet your cub, the lamp, brought her comfort;

Without him, loneliness would have kept her from sleep.

He lit her quarters with the beauty of his brow,

That radiant brow whose lights shone forth.

    يا طيبَها نَفحةً لِلقَلبِ قَد نَفَعَت

    Through him she breathed your scents;

How sweet a breath, bringing benefit to the heart!

You have come with the best of arrivals, gladdening

Hearts among us that were distraught when you were gone.

And praise be to God! With our own eyes we saw

The lights of your face shining in Beirut.

I congratulate you on this arrival, just as

I congratulated my soul, which separation had crushed.

Be safe, and remain honored among eminence's peaks,

Ascending heights that never sink or fall low.

So may you never cease rejoicing in the lamp,

Seeing him a grandfather, with grandchildren following him.

Sound in body, living amply and at ease,

In honor's saddle, which neither fades nor ends.

Long-lived, with life made sweet through him,

Protected by life's delights from its vexations.

As long as the East remains a spring without equal,

    Welling up and gushing forth the horizon's stars;

As long as lightning flashes and a collared dove sings

    In the garden, as long as earth suckles the clouds' milk;

As long as the eye is gladdened whenever it beholds:

From honor's horizon the sun of glory has risen.
