مَنْwhoever لَمdid not يَبِعْsell روحَهُhis soul فيin الحبِّlove مَغبونُshortchanged
وَمَنand whoever خَلاwas free عَنof هَوىlove for الغزلانِthe gazelles مَجنونُmad
Whoever has not sold his soul in love is shortchanged.
And whoever is free of love for gazelles is mad.
إِنّيindeed I اِمرُؤٌa man عِشقُpassionate love for أَهلِpeople of الحُسْنِbeauty مَذهَبُهُhis creed
وَمَذهَبُand the creed of العِشقِpassionate love فيamong أَهلthe people of الهَوىlove دينُa religion
I am a man whose creed is love of the beautiful,
And the creed of love is a religion among lovers.
لَهُfor him الهَوىpassion دَيدَنٌa constant practice وَالحبُّand love عادَتُهُhis habit
وَفيand in هَوىlove for الغِيدِsupple beauties مَسلوبٌdespoiled وَمَفتونُand bewitched
Passion is his constant practice, and love his habit,
And in love with supple beauties, he is despoiled and bewitched.
قُدودُهمtheir figures كَالقَناlike lances بِالطَّعنِin piercing قاسِيَةٌcruel
وَإِنْand if يَميلواthey sway فَفيthen in أَعطافِهمtheir sides لِينُsuppleness
Their figures, like lances, are cruel in piercing,
Yet if they sway, there is suppleness in their sides.
هَويتُI loved مِنهُمamong them غَزالاًa gazelle لاno نَظيرَequal لَهُto him
وَفيand in عُيونيmy eyes لِمَنfor the one whom أَهواهُI love تحسينُbeautification
I loved a gazelle among them who has no equal,
And my eyes lend beauty to the one I love.
لِحاظُهُhis glances البيضُgleaming blades قَدalready سُنَّتwere sharpened وَقَدand already فَتَكَتhave slain
وَالسَّيفُand the sword أَكثَرُgreater فَتكاًin deadliness وَهوَwhile it is مَسنونُsharpened
His glances—gleaming blades—have been whetted and have slain,
And a sword is deadlier when it is sharpened.
لاdo not تُنكِرواdeny رَميَthe shooting of جَفنَيهِhis two eyelids السّهامَthe arrows فَماfor not
إِنكارُهُdenying it عِندَamong أَهلِthe people of العِشقpassionate love مَظنونُconceivable
Do not deny that his eyelids shoot arrows, for
No denial of it is conceivable among lovers.
أَيُنكِرُdoes he deny? الرَّميَthe shooting إِذwhen هَذيthese حَواجِبهُhis eyebrows
قَوسٌa bow بِقَوسٍwith a bow لِرَميِto shoot الصّبِّthe lovesick lover مقرونُcoupled
Can anyone deny the shooting, when these eyebrows of his are
A bow coupled with a bow, to shoot the lovesick lover?
قَدindeed أورثَcaused السّحرُthe magic مِنfrom أَجفانِهِhis eyelids خللاًdisorder
فيin عقلِthe mind of صبٍّa lovesick lover علاهoverwhelmed him منهfrom it تَوهينُweakening
The magic from his eyelids has caused disorder
In a lovesick lover's mind; its weakening has overwhelmed him.
بَلrather أَثّرَaffected السّحرُthe magic فيin جَفنِthe eyelid of الحبيبِthe beloved فماso not
إضعافُهits weakening of الجفنَthe eyelid عنfrom ذيone possessing اللُّبِّunderstanding مكنونُhidden
Rather, magic has affected the beloved's eyelid, for
Its weakening of the eyelid is not hidden from the discerning.
لَكِنَّbut تَأثيرَهُits effect فيon الصّبِّthe lovesick lover أَوهَنَهُweakened him
وَإِنَّand indeed تَأثيرَهُits effect فيon الجفنِthe eyelid تَزيينُadornment
But its effect upon the lovesick lover has weakened him,
While its effect upon the eyelid is adornment.
فَالمِسكُso the musk شامَتُهhis beauty mark والآسُand the myrtle عارضُهُhis cheek's down
والوَردُand the rose وجنتُهhis upper cheek والخدُّand the cheek نسرينُeglantine
So his beauty mark is musk, and the down on his cheeks is myrtle,
And his upper cheek is a rose, and his cheek an eglantine.
وَالرّمحُand the spear قامَتُهُhis stature والسّيفُand the sword مُقلتهُhis eye
والمُغرمُand the enamored one الصّبّthe lovesick lover مَجروحٌwounded ومَطعونُand pierced
And his stature is a spear, and his eye a sword,
And the enamored, lovesick lover is wounded and pierced.

والكنزُand the treasure فيهwithin it ثمينُprecious الدُرِّpearls مخزونُstored
His smiling mouth parts to reveal the cool sweetness of coral,
And a treasure of precious pearls lies stored within it.
شَبَّهتُI likened بِالنونِto the letter nun حسناًfor beauty مِنهُof him حاجِبهhis eyebrow
وَإِنّand indeed تَشبيهَهlikening it بالنونto the letter nun مَيمونُauspicious
I likened his eyebrow, for its beauty, to the letter nun,
And likening it to nun is auspicious.
وَإِنَّماand only قَلبتI inverted مِنbecause of كَونِthe being of شامَتِهِhis beauty mark
فيon خَدِّهِhis cheek نُقطةa dot تُدرىis recognized بِهاby it النونُthe letter nun
I only inverted it because his beauty mark
On his cheek is a dot by which nun is recognized.
قدalready واعدَhe promised الصبَّthe lovesick lover فيin تمّوزَTammuz يَمنَحُهُgrant him

مِنهُfrom him الوِصالَunion إِذاwhen قَدalready جاءَcame تشرينُTishrin
In Tammuz, he promised the lovesick lover to grant him
Union with him when Tishrin came.

And the promise stirred my yearning when he promised me,
And nothing but union can soothe my yearning.

إِذwhen جاءَcame تِشرينTishrin وَاِستَعلانيَand overwhelmed me الهونُhumiliation
And he turned the promise into a threat and drove me away,
When Tishrin came, and humiliation overwhelmed me.
ياO حرَّthe burning of قلبيَmy heart فيin تشرينTishrin حينwhen أتىit came
وَإِنّand indeed قَلبيmy heart لِنارِfor the fire of الحبّlove كانونُa brazier
Oh, the burning of my heart in Tishrin when it came!
And my heart is a brazier for the fire of love.

A king of beauty, to whom souls have been given,
And every mind is pledged to him for all time.

Sweetly nasal-voiced, his resonance is a mellow sound with which
The large-eyed houris from the Garden of Eternity fell in love.
مُذsince قامَhe stood يَتلوreciting كِتابَthe Book of اللَّهِGod قِيلit was said لَهُto him

When he stood reciting God's Book, it was said to him:
For one such as this, Jibrin came bearing the Qur'an.
فَالكَونُso the universe يَرقصُdances والأطيارُand the birds قَدalready طَرِبتwere enraptured

So the universe dances, and the birds have thrilled with joy,
And in the garden the branches sway.

Since he prolonged Ha Mim in it, there gathered around him
Ta Ha and Ya Sin, seeking his recitation.
عَمّيْتI made a riddle فيin ذاthis جَلالاًout of reverence بِاِسمِwith the name of ممتَدِحيthe one I praise
وَإِنّand indeed تَعمِيَتيmy veiling of الممدوحَthe praised one تبيينُa disclosure
Here, out of reverence, I made a riddle of my praised one's name,
Yet my veiling of the praised one reveals him.

And he is the distinguished teacher, our master,
A vessel laden with excellence—and he is the sea.

Blessed in name and qualities, auspicious.

The gallant lord whose eminence has grown great,
And often have sultans fallen short of him.

A needy, poor man offers in this life.
