وَكامِلٍand a perfect man عَنfrom مَدحِهِpraising him قَدindeed نَهىforbade
مَنْone who لَيسَhas not مِنof عَذبِthe sweetness of المَديحِpraise اِرتَوىdrunk his fill
And a perfect man has forbidden praise of himself
to one who has not drunk his fill of sweet praise.
أَيَنتَهيwill he desist? مَنْone who طَبعُهhis nature مَدحُهُpraising him
وَمَدحُهُand praising him يَدعوcalls إِلَيهِto it الهَوىlove
Will one whose nature is to praise him desist,
when love calls him to praise him?
فَإِنْso if يَكُنbe غيّاًgoing astray مَديحيmy praise لَهُof him
دَعنيlet me أَكنْbe أَوّلthe first مَنone who قَدindeed غَوىwent astray
So if my praise of him is going astray,
let me be the first to go astray.
