The myrtle-like down on his cheeks has toyed with my mind.

And the beloved's dusky lips are balm for my heart's wound.

O you who have bewitched me, a gazelle in its leafy lair,

I swear by your slender, swaying form:

You are nothing but a temptation to people.

    The counselors do not make me doubt my love for you;

So will the reproachers turn me back and find fault with me?

O you who know my plight and melt me away,

I complain to you of my yearning, and you answer me:

One suffers from loving the sons of kings.

What way is there to meet him and be united with him

for one enslaved by love for him, bereft of reason?

Will you not be generous to one who has gone far from his family,

O you for whose sake I accepted exile,

and separation from my homelands, and distance from my people?
