إِجابَةُanswering الجاهِلِthe ignorant person مَذمومَةٌblameworthy
إِجابَةُ الجاهِلِ مَذمومَةٌ
إنّindeed سكوتَsilence المرءِof the person أمرٌa thing حسَنْgood
إنّ سكوتَ المرءِ أمرٌ حسَنْ
Answering the ignorant is blameworthy.
The foolish man's response is blameworthy
Indeed, a person's silence is a good thing.
Indeed, one's silence is good
أَقولُI say لَوif كَلّمَنيspoke to me جاهِلٌan ignorant person
أَقولُ لَو كَلّمَني جاهِلٌ
نَذَرتُI have vowed لِلرّحمَنِto the Most Merciful صَوماًa fast فلنْso will not
نَذَرتُ لِلرّحمَنِ صَوماً فلنْ
I say, if an ignorant person speaks to me:
If an ignorant man were to speak to me
I have vowed a fast to the Most Merciful, so I shall not—
I would fast for the Merciful One, so let it be
