وَلَمّاand when أَتىcame البَحرِيُّal-Bahri بَيروتَBeirut زائِراًas a visitor
وَلَمّا أَتى البَحرِيُّ بَيروتَ زائِراً
إِلَيناto us لَقَدindeed أَهدىgave as a gift عُقوداًnecklaces مِنَof الشعرِpoetry
إِلَينا لَقَد أَهدى عُقوداً مِنَ الشعرِ
And when al-Bahri came to Beirut to visit
When the poet from Bahrain came to visit us in Beirut
Us, he indeed gave necklaces of verse.
He brought with him necklaces made of poetry
فَلاso no بِدعَwonder أَنthat أَهدىgave as a gift لَناto us الدّرَّpearls ناظِماًstringing; composing verse
فَلا بِدعَ أَن أَهدى لَنا الدّرَّ ناظِماً
فَناهيكَfor it suffices you أَنَّthat الدُّرَّpearls يَبدوemerge مِنَfrom البحرِthe sea
فَناهيكَ أَنَّ الدُّرَّ يَبدو مِنَ البحرِ
So it is no wonder he gave us pearls, stringing them into verse;
So it's no wonder he gifted us these shining pearls
For suffice it to say that pearls emerge from the sea.
For such gems arise effortlessly from the sea
