وَرَوضَةِand a grove زَيتونٍolive trees أَقمتُI stayed بِظلّهاin its shade
بِجَمعٍwith a company لَهمto them دونَto the exclusion of الوَرىhumankind العزُّhonor وَالعَقلُand intellect
And in the shade of an olive grove I stayed,
And in an olive grove I dwelt beneath its shade
With a company who alone among humankind possess honor and wisdom.
With a band for whom beneath the firmament glory and wisdom abide
وَقَدand indeed مالَتِleaned الأَغصانُthe branches تَحنوbending tenderly عَليهمُover them
وَحَنَّتand grew tender حَنانَthe tenderness of الأُسدِlions إِذwhen يَرضَعُsuckles الشبلُthe lion cub
And the branches leaned, bending tenderly over them,
And the boughs inclined towards them in affection
And grew tender, as lions do when the cub suckles.
And inclined affectionately as a lioness when she suckles her cubs
وَلاand not بِدْعَanything strange إِنif مالَتit leaned إِلَيهمtoward them لظنِّهاbecause it believed
وَهمwhile they همthey themselves ضِياءٌlight أَنّهاthat it لهمُfor them أصلُa source
And no wonder it leaned toward them, believing—
And it is no wonder that they inclined towards them in their belief
They themselves being light—that it was their source.
That they are the source of the light from which the boughs originally sprang
