وَطائيّةand a woman of Tayy غازَلتهاI flirted with her بِتَلطُّفٍwith gentleness
وَطائيّة غازَلتها بِتَلطُّفٍ
وَمِنand from فَوقِناabove us مِنfrom حُسنِهاher beauty اِمتَدَّspread out فيُّshade
وَمِن فَوقِنا مِن حُسنِها اِمتَدَّ فيُّ
And I gently flirted with a woman of Tayy.
A gentle soul she was when I began to woo her
And from her beauty, shade spread out above us.
The sight of her from afar enraptured me
فَقُلتُso I said لَهاto her أَيّwhich الشّعوبِof the peoples مقدّمٌforemost
فَقُلتُ لَها أَيّ الشّعوبِ مقدّمٌ
فَقالَتso she said عَلىat فَورthe instant التّغازلof the flirtation طيُّTayy
فَقالَت عَلى فَور التّغازل طيُّ
So I said to her, “Which of the peoples is foremost?”
I asked her of what nation do you hail?
So she replied at once amid our flirtation, “Tayy.”
Prompt was her flirtatious reply: Tay!
