وَلَستAnd I am not بِمَنone who قَدindeed كانَwas لِلراحِof wine شارباًa drinker
وَلَست بِمَن قَد كانَ لِلراحِ شارباً
وَثَوبُAnd the robe التّقىof piety لاno شكّdoubt أَجملmore becoming بِالحرِّto a noble man
وَثَوبُ التّقى لا شكّ أَجمل بِالحرِّ
And I am not one who has been a drinker of wine;
I am not one who was a drinker of spirits
And the robe of piety is doubtless more becoming to a noble man.
The garment of piety is surely most beautiful when pure white
إِذاIf لَمnot يَصِرbecome ثَوبthe robe التّقىof piety غَيرother than أَبيضٍwhite
إِذا لَم يَصِر ثَوب التّقى غَير أَبيضٍ
فَهَلThen would...? كانَwas يَبقىremain حينَwhen يصبغُit is dyed بِالخَمريwith wine
فَهَل كانَ يَبقى حينَ يصبغُ بِالخَمري
If the robe of piety can be nothing but white,
If the garment of piety does not remain any color but white
Then would it remain when dyed with wine?
Would it then remain when dyed with red wine?
