وَناعورةand a waterwheel دارَتturned فَدرتso I turned نَظيرهاlike it
وَناعورة دارَت فَدرت نَظيرها
وَقَدand indeed هاجَsurged بيwithin me وَجديmy longing وَزادَand increased بِيَwithin me الجَوىlove's anguish
وَقَد هاجَ بي وَجدي وَزادَ بِيَ الجَوى
And a waterwheel turned, so I turned like it;
A fountain circled and rolled, its likeness
And my longing surged within me, and love's anguish grew within me.
And it stirred me, my fervor increased, my inner heat
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَقَدcertainly أَشبهتهاresembled it غَيرَexcept أَنّهاthat it
وَإِنّي لَقَد أَشبهتها غَيرَ أَنّها
مَعَwith الماءِthe water قَدindeed دارَتturned وَدُرتand I turned مَعَwith الهَوىlove
مَعَ الماءِ قَد دارَت وَدُرت مَعَ الهَوى
And I did indeed resemble it, except that it
And truly I resembled it, except that
Turned with the water, while I turned with love.
It circled with water and rolled with passion
