أَكرَمتُI honored عاذِلَتيmy female reproacher وَإِنْand even if تَكُshe is فيin الهَوىlove
أَكرَمتُ عاذِلَتي وَإِنْ تَكُ في الهَوى
عيناًan eye (a spy) تراقبُنيshe watches me وقلبيand my heart تؤلمُshe pains
عيناً تراقبُني وقلبي تؤلمُ
I honored my reproacher, though in love she is
I honored my reproacher, though she be
a spying eye that watches me and pains my heart.
In passion an eye that watches me and a heart that hurts me.
قَدindeed شارَكَتshe has shared عَينَthe eye الحَبيبةِthe beloved woman فيin اِسمِهاits name
قَد شارَكَت عَينَ الحَبيبةِ في اِسمِها
وَلِأَجلِand for the sake of عَينٍan eye أَلفُa thousand عَينٍeyes تكرمُare honored
وَلِأَجلِ عَينٍ أَلفُ عَينٍ تكرمُ
Indeed, she shares a name with the beloved's eye;
The eye of my beloved bears her name,
and for one eye's sake, a thousand eyes are honored.
And for one eye I'd honor a thousand eyes.
