لَمّاwhen نَظَرتُI gazed بِعَينيwith my eye شَمسَthe sun جَبهَتِهِhis brow
رَأىhe saw اِحتِراقاًa burning بِقَلبيin my heart قالَhe said ماwhat حَرقاburned
When I gazed with my eye at the sun of his brow,
he saw a burning in my heart and said, “What burned it?”
فَقُلتso I said عَينايَmy eyes بِلَّورٌcrystal وَأَسفلهُand beneath it
قَلبيmy heart المُتَيَّمُenslaved by love وَالمُضنىand worn out بِمَنby the one whom عَشِقاit loved
So I said, “My eyes are crystal, and beneath it
is my heart, love-enslaved and worn by the one it loved;
وَالشَّمسُand the sun مِنfrom وَجهِكَyour face الزّاهيradiant أَشعّتهاits rays
لِلقَلبِto the heart خَرَّتfell مِنَfrom البِلوَّرِthe crystal فَاِحتَرقاso it burned
and the sun from your radiant face—its rays
fell from the crystal onto my heart, so it burned.”
