ذاتُshe who possesses الجَمالِbeauty قَدalready دَرَتlearned
ذاتُ الجَمالِ قَد دَرَت
بِأَنَّنيthat I فيهاover her أَرِقْam sleepless
بِأَنَّني فيها أَرِقْ
The beautiful one has come to know
The beautiful one has learned
that because of her I lie awake.
that I lie sleepless over her.
زارَتshe visited بِلَيلٍby night ماnot بِهِin it
زارَت بِلَيلٍ ما بِهِ
لَناover us رَقيبٌa watcher يَستَرِقspies stealthily
لَنا رَقيبٌ يَستَرِق
She visited on a night when
She visited by night, when there was no
we had no watcher eavesdropping.
watcher spying on us.
فَصُبحهُthen its dawn تَنَفَّساًa breath
فَصُبحهُ تَنَفَّساً
أَبدىlet forth وَقامَand rose يَستَبِقraces ahead
أَبدى وَقامَ يَستَبِق
Then its dawn began to breathe,
Then its dawn let forth a breath
showed itself, rose, and raced ahead.
and rose to race ahead.
وَغارَand grew jealous مِنّاof us حَسَداًout of envy
وَغارَ مِنّا حَسَداً
يُريدُwants أَنّاthat we نَفتَرِقwe part
يُريدُ أَنّا نَفتَرِق
And, envious, it grew jealous of us,
And it grew jealous of us, out of envy,
wanting us to part.
wanting us to part.
قُلتُI said تَنَفَّسْbreathe عاجِلاًat once
قُلتُ تَنَفَّسْ عاجِلاً
ياO صُبحُdawn حتّىuntil تَنفَلِقyou split apart
يا صُبحُ حتّى تَنفَلِق
I said, “Breathe on in haste,
I said, "Breathe at once,
O dawn, until you break apart!”
O dawn, until you burst!"
