شَمسُa sun حُسنٍof beauty لَقَدindeed زَهاshone resplendent
شَمسُ حُسنٍ لَقَد زَها
ماnot حَكىmatched البَدرthe full moon حسنَهُhis beauty
ما حَكى البَدر حسنَهُ
A sun of beauty has indeed shone resplendent.
The sun of beauty has indeed set
The full moon has not matched his beauty.
The full moon cannot describe her beauty
أَمرضmade ill الصبّthe lovesick lover بِالجَفاwith coldness
أَمرض الصبّ بِالجَفا
أَمرَضَmay make languid اللَّهGod جَفنَهُhis eyelid
أَمرَضَ اللَّه جَفنَهُ
He made the lovesick lover ill with coldness.
She made the youth lovesick with her indifference
May God make his eyelid languid.
May God make her eyelids sick
