اِستاكَcleaned his teeth بِالمِسواكِwith the tooth-cleaning twig خاليfree of اللّمَىdark coloring of the lips

وَقَبَّلَand kissed المِسواكthe tooth-cleaning twig منهُfrom him الشّفاهْthe lips
وَقَبَّلَ المِسواك منهُ الشّفاهْ
My dark-lipped beloved cleaned his teeth with a miswak,
He whose lips lacked a dark hue cleaned his teeth with a siwak.
and his lips kissed the miswak.
And the siwak kissed his lips.
فَأَورَقَthen sprouted leaves المِسواكthe tooth-cleaning twig مِنfrom حينِهِits moment
فَأَورَقَ المِسواك مِن حينِهِ
وَقالَand said إِذwhen قَدalready مالَleaned فَخراًin pride وَتاهand swaggered
وَقالَ إِذ قَد مالَ فَخراً وَتاه
At once, the miswak put forth leaves
Then the siwak sprouted leaves that very instant.
and said, as it swayed proudly and strutted:
And it said, as it leaned proudly and swaggered:
إِنْif صِرتُI became مِنْfrom ذاthis خَضِراًgreen لاno اِمتراdoubt
إِنْ صِرتُ مِنْ ذا خَضِراً لا اِمترا

“Indeed, through him I have turned green—beyond dispute;
If I have turned green from this, there is no doubt—
have I not drunk the water of the Spring of Life?”
Have I not drunk the water of the spring of life?
