تَغَنّىsang عَلىto the accompaniment of المِزمارِthe flute بَدرُa full moon مَحاسِنٍbeauties
تَغَنّى عَلى المِزمارِ بَدرُ مَحاسِنٍ
فَحَلَّand then settled بِقَلبِin the heart of المُستَهامِthe lovesick one شِفاءُhealing
فَحَلَّ بِقَلبِ المُستَهامِ شِفاءُ
A full moon of graces sang to the flute’s accompaniment,
A full moon of beauty sang to the flute's accompaniment,
and healing came to dwell in the lovesick heart.
And healing settled in the lovesick one's heart.
وَقَدand indeed قالَsaid ليto me المِزمارُthe flute روحكyour soul مَنone who هَوىhas loved
وَقَد قالَ لي المِزمارُ روحك مَن هَوى
وَروحيand my soul وَلاand not يَخفىis hidden عَلَيكَfrom you هَواءُair
وَروحي وَلا يَخفى عَلَيكَ هَواءُ
The flute said to me, “Yours is the soul of one who has loved,”
And the flute said to me, "Your soul is one who has loved,
“and so is mine; nor is the air hidden from you.”
And my soul—as is no secret to you—is air."
