أَشَدُّharsher عّلىupon الصبِّthe lovesick lover سَهمُthe arrow of المَلامْreproach
أَشَدُّ عّلى الصبِّ سَهمُ المَلامْ
مِنَthan الضّربِa blow بِالرّمحِwith the spear أَوor بِالحُسامْwith the sharp sword
مِنَ الضّربِ بِالرّمحِ أَو بِالحُسامْ
The arrow of reproach is harsher on the lovesick lover
The shafts of blame sting sharper than spears or swords
than a blow with a spear or a sharp sword.
Alas my heart! Reproach has come upon me because of love
فَياso, O وَيحَalas for قَلبيmy heart وَإِنand indeed العَذولthe reproacher
فَيا وَيحَ قَلبي وَإِن العَذول
لَحانيhe rebuked me عَلىfor الحبّlove خلِّيmy beloved وَلامand blamed
لَحاني عَلى الحبّ خلِّي وَلام
So alas for my heart! And indeed the reproacher—
Leave me be!
my beloved—rebuked me for love and blamed me.
