قَدalready حَطَّهُlaid him down غاسِلوهُthose washing him فَوقَupon مُغتَسَلٍa washing slab
قَد حَطَّهُ غاسِلوهُ فَوقَ مُغتَسَلٍ
فَكانَand so he was كالبدرِlike the full moon مَوضوعاًset down عَلىupon عرشِa throne
فَكانَ كالبدرِ مَوضوعاً عَلى عرشِ
Those washing him had laid him on a washing slab;
They laid him down to wash him on the bier
and he was like the full moon set upon a throne.
Like the full moon he shone resting on its throne
وَحينَand when سارواthey went بِهِwith him فيin النّعشِthe bier قلتُI said لَهُمto them
وَحينَ ساروا بِهِ في النّعشِ قلتُ لَهُم
مَنwho صَيَّرَmade البدرَthe full moon جَهلاًout of ignorance مِنone of بَنيthe sons of نَعشِNa‘sh (the Bier)
مَن صَيَّرَ البدرَ جَهلاً مِن بَني نَعشِ
And when they bore him on the bier, I said to them:
And when in the coffin they bore him along
Who, in ignorance, made the full moon one of Bani Na‘sh?
I cried, who has set the moon in a bier so mean?
