وَلَمّاand when تَعَذَّرَbecame unattainable مَحبوبهُhis beloved
وَلَمّا تَعَذَّرَ مَحبوبهُ
بِهِfor him اِزدادَhe increased وَجداًin longing وَحارْand was bewildered
بِهِ اِزدادَ وَجداً وَحارْ
And when his beloved became unattainable,
When his beloved became unattainable
his longing for him increased, and he was bewildered.
His passion and bewilderment grew
وَبادَرand he hastened فيon ذَقنِهِhis chin حَلقَهاshaving it
وَبادَر في ذَقنِهِ حَلقَها
وَقَدand indeed رامَhe sought فيin العِشقِlove تَركَabandoning اِستِتارْconcealment
وَقَد رامَ في العِشقِ تَركَ اِستِتارْ
And he hastened to shave his chin,
He put the ring around his neck
And he had sought to abandon concealment in love.
As he had decided to unveil his love
وَقالَand he said حَلَقتI shaved عِذاريmy cheek-whiskers لأنّيbecause I
وَقالَ حَلَقت عِذاري لأنّي
عَلىupon خَدّهِhis cheek قَدindeed خَلعتI cast off العِذارthe bridle’s cheek-strap
عَلى خَدّهِ قَد خَلعت العِذار
And he said, “I shaved my cheek-whiskers because I
He said, "I put the ring around my neck
have cast off the bridle upon his cheek.”
For on his cheek I have cast off the veil"
