An eye that, through separation, has tasted no sleep,

And a heart that sickness has sorely bitten.

How can my heart heal from its wounds,

When the arrows of glances are a sword—and sharper still?

I marvel at her eyelids, languid as they are:

How can they grow strong through their victory, though ailing?

How can I forget love, when my being springs from it?

So I cast reproach away from you and reject it utterly.

    قُلتُ دَعْهُ وَاِستَبدِلَنْ عَنهُ عَرضا

    And a beloved wished to cut my heart to pieces;

I said, 'Leave it, and take goods in exchange for it.'

But he refused to sell it, then cried:

'My aim is to borrow it from you—as a loan.'

    Some lovers fighting one another.

Among them are those who became wounded, and among them

Those no longer alive; some have been utterly crushed.

He has shunned me without any fault of mine, yet

He is a sovereign: whenever he wills, his will prevails.

How my heart aches for a time of union!

Ah, may God preserve it—that time now past!

I would not settle for being the sky

In those days; today you would think I had become earth.

And I see myself fallen from my exalted rank,

When time turned away from me and averted its eyes.

    مِن مَديحي لِنفلِه صارَ فَرضا

    Yet I was ennobled when I offered praise;

My praise, in return for his bounty, became a duty:

The keen wit of the age, the glory of lofty virtues,

The brilliant mind of al-Sham, throughout its length and breadth,

    Abid al-Rahman, the imam whose

Hand has firmly grasped the branches of knowledge.

A pillar of glory, through whom the wall of lofty virtues

Has grown strong; without him it would have crumbled.

The generous front-runner: none can rival

Him—not even noble steeds—in running or galloping.

He whose capital has become noble conduct,

And whose profit emerged from it when it became ready cash.

The son of my teacher and master, al-Kuzbari, the

Exalted one, pure in ancestry and honor.

He possessed forbearance, high resolve, and qualities

Fashioned purely from the essence of gentleness.

Does he have any disputant capable

Of unraveling what his two hands have firmly bound?

God forbid! We know of none; yet

My Lord's bounty is for whomever He chooses and favors.

Beautiful in their composition, and duly presented.

And may he always attend to them graciously,

Not turning his flank away to withhold his bounty,

As long as praise of him, rising toward lofty heights,

Leads Ibn Fath Allah—Allah the Guardian—there,

And through praise of him there appears, seeking healing,

An eye that, through separation, has tasted no sleep.
