بَدرُ حُسنٍ في كَفِّه شِمت مِسكاً

وَبِخَدَّيْهِ شمت أَحسَنَ خالِ

وَبِخَدَّيْهِ شمت أَحسَنَ خالِ

A full moon of beauty—in his palm I spied musk.

The full moon of beauty held musk in its palm,

And on his cheeks I spied the loveliest beauty mark.

And on its cheeks held the best moles.

قُلتُ ماذا فَقالَ مِسك غزالٍ

قُلتُ ماذا فَقالَ مِسك غزالٍ

قُلت ما الخالُ قالَ مِسك جَمالِ

قُلت ما الخالُ قالَ مِسك جَمالِ

I asked, “What is this?” He replied, “A gazelle’s musk.”

I said what is this? It said the musk of a gazelle.

I asked, “What is the beauty mark?” He said, “Beauty’s musk.”

I said what are the moles? It said the musk of beauty.
