سَهِرتُI stayed awake فيin الحبِّlove ليلاًone night
ماnot ذُقتُI tasted فيهin it سُباتاslumber
I stayed awake in love one night;
I stayed up all night in love
I tasted no slumber in it.
Not tasting any sleep in it
تَنَفّسَbreathed الصّبحُthe dawn فيهِin it
فسَرَّso gladdened روحاًa soul وذاتاand a self
Dawn breathed within it,
Morning breathed in it
And so gladdened soul and self.
Spreading spirit and essence
وَغابَand vanished عَنّيfrom me كَأنّيas though I
لَمdid not يُبدِshow نَحويtoward me اِلتِفاتاregard
And it vanished from me, as though I
And it disappeared from me as if
Had been shown no regard.
It had not paid attention to me
فَقُلتُso I said لِلّيلِto the night قُلْsay ليto me
بِأيِّنْin what place صُبحكَyour dawn باتاspent the night
So I said to the night: Tell me,
So I said to the night, tell me
Where did your dawn spend the night?
Where did your morning spend the night?
فَقالَso it said لَمdid not يَبقَremain صبحٌdawn
فَإنّfor indeed صُبحِيَmy dawn فاتاhas gone
It said: No dawn remains,
It said no morning remains
For my dawn has gone.
For my morning has passed
وَالصّبحُand the dawn كانَwas عَليلاًailing
And dawn was ailing;
And the morning was ill
When it breathed, it died.
When it breathed, it died
