لَكِن عَفافي اِرتَضَى لِي شقةَ البينِ
I seek to visit her, and my soul yearns;
I yearn to visit her, though my soul desires,
But my chastity has chosen for me the gulf of separation.
Yet my chastity chose for me the hardship of separation.
فَالعَينُfor the eye زانِيَةadulterous لاno شَكّdoubt سارِقَةa thief
فَالعَينُ زانِيَة لا شَكّ سارِقَة
وَلَيسَand there is not فيin ذاكَthat مِنany حُكمٍjudgment عَلىagainst العَينِthe eye
وَلَيسَ في ذاكَ مِن حُكمٍ عَلى العَينِ
For the eye is adulterous—without doubt, a thief;
The eye is surely an adulteress, thieving,
Yet in that there is no judgment against the eye.
But there is no rule over the eye for that.
