مُذsince قابَلَmet البَدرthe full moon وَجهthe face of الحِبِّthe beloved بَينَهماbetween them both
لَقَدindeed بَداappeared النورُthe light لاnot يَخفَىis hidden عَلىfrom بَصرِan eye
Since the full moon met the beloved's face, between them
Ever since the full moon met the face of love between them
Light indeed appeared, hidden from no eye.
The light began to shine, not hidden from sight
تَجاذَباهُthey both vied for it وَكلٌّand each يَدَّعيهِclaims it لَهُfor himself
إِلىuntil الصّباحِthe morning وراءَbeyond اللّيلِthe night وَالسحرِand the predawn hours
They both vied for it, each claiming it as his own,
They pulled it towards themselves, each claiming it as their own
Until morning, beyond the night and the predawn hours.
Until the morning, behind the night and dawn
وَجاءَتِand came الشّمسthe sun وَالدّعوىand the claim لَقَدindeed سَمِعتshe had heard
فَأَثبَتَتso she established أَنّهthat it is the case that لاno نورَlight للقَمرِfor the moon
And the sun came, having indeed heard the claim,
The sun came and I heard the claim
So she established that the moon had no light.
It proved the moon has no light of its own
