لَقَدindeed أَطلتُمyou have prolonged جَفاكُمْyour estrangement
لَقَد أَطلتُم جَفاكُمْ
وفيَّand within me يَنموgrows هَواكُمْlove for you
وفيَّ يَنمو هَواكُمْ
Indeed, you have prolonged your estrangement,
You've been cruel in your long estrangement
And within me, love for you grows.
While passion for you grows within me.
وماand not وصَلتمyou have visited مُحِبّاًa lover
وما وصَلتم مُحِبّاً
يَودُّhe longs for يوماًone day لِقاكُمْmeeting you
يَودُّ يوماً لِقاكُمْ
Nor have you visited a lover
No lovers ever attain the beloved
Who longs one day to meet you.
Who one day hopes again to see you.
والعَينُand the eye فيat كلّevery وقتٍmoment
والعَينُ في كلّ وقتٍ
مأمولُهاits hope أنْto تراكمْsee you
مأمولُها أنْ تراكمْ
And the eye, at every moment,
My eyes at all times hopefully await
Hopes to see you.
One day again to look upon you.
وقدand indeed قطَعتمyou have cut off كتاباًcorrespondence
وقد قطَعتم كتاباً
عنfrom عبدِكمyour servant وفتاكمْand your lad
عن عبدِكم وفتاكمْ
And you have stopped sending letters
You've broken with a servant, a lover -
To your servant and your lad.
Some slanderer came between us two.
لعلّperhaps شخصاًsomeone وشىspoke maliciously بيabout me
لعلّ شخصاً وشى بي
وعنand from وِصاليunion with me نَهاكمْhe forbade you
وعن وِصالي نَهاكمْ
Perhaps someone has slandered me
I think well of you, no other I want;
And forbidden you to be with me.
To be united with you I long to do.
والظنُّand the opinion فيكمof you جميلٌfavorable
والظنُّ فيكم جميلٌ
ولستُand I do not أهوىlove سِواكُمْanyone but you
ولستُ أهوى سِواكُمْ
Yet I think well of you,
And I love no one but you.
